In this course you will learn about imitation gemstones, the different methods used to manufacture lab-created gemstones, how to distinguish them from their natural counterparts, and how to detect the various treatments used to improve the appearance and/or value of gemstones. This course takes a more practical look at the identification of gemstones based on colour and transparency. Each colour grouping is further divided into gemstones (natural and lab-created) based on their optical character and sign with a separate lesson devoted to gemstones that exhibit optical phenomena or are unusual in appearance. Upon the successful completion of this course you will receive course credits towards both the Career Gemmologist Diploma and Coloured Gemstone Professional Diploma Programs.

Upon completion of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the chemical nature of diamonds, how they are formed, classified (colourless and fancy coloured), mined, processed and cut, the unique properties that allow them to be separated from other colourless gemstones, and how they are graded. This course concentrates on the twenty-six most common groups, species and varieties of coloured gemstones giving a comprehensive overview of their physical and optical properties, how they are mined and cut, their unique identifying features, and the various systems currently used to grade them.
